How to make an ironing board cover

Making a new ironing board cover was easy and fairly fast.  I was able to make it with materials that I had on hand.  You can see by the bottom of the board that it had three old covers on top of each other.  Each one was so ugly that I just can't bear to show them to you but they were grayed with layers of old spray starch.

  1.  I took the covers off and laid one of them on a piece of an  extra sheet that I had.  Then cut it out leaving a couple of inches all the way around..  Be sure to give yourself at least that much space.  In places where I didn't it was a little bit tight.

2.Now cut a piece the same size as the tip of the board so that you can slip it on
You will hem it and sew an elastic to it along the straight edge.  Just pull it to a medium stretch and zig zag it on .
 3. Do the same thing with the bottom of the board.  I made it a little deep and had to really stretch to get it on so I would only make it about four inches deep the next time.
You can see the finished  tapered end here.

4. Now sew strips of velcro underneath so you can hook it together under the board when you have it on.  I cut the velcro off of one of the old purchased covers.  I was able to put the cover on and determine the best place to put the strips according to the underside of my board.  that was it will not get in the way of the sliding leg notches like the old one did.  Custom made!
5. Now do the same with the wide end on the board.  You have it!  But don't forget to make a padding to go underneath it.  You will see this tutorial below.

6.Lay out the ironing board pad from the old set and cut around it OR just lay your ironing board down upside down and trace around it.  that would give you the perfect fit.
 7. cut a short piece for the pocket on the tapered end and one for the wider end.  they can be about four inches deep and will go around your board.    Now slip the pad on the board and the cover over it and you have a fresh new cover that will last a long time. Ahhhhh. I love it!
